Understanding Exercise Needs

Every dog needs regular physical activity, but the amount varies significantly based on breed, age, size, and overall health.

By Energy Level

  • High energy breeds (Border Collies, German Shepherds, Labs): 90+ minutes daily
  • Moderate energy breeds (Beagles, Corgis, Cocker Spaniels): 60-90 minutes daily
  • Low energy breeds (French Bulldogs, Shih Tzus, Basset Hounds): 30-60 minutes daily

By Age

  • Puppies: Short, frequent play sessions. Avoid long runs until joints are developed.
  • Adult dogs: Peak exercise capacity. Match activity to breed needs.
  • Senior dogs: Gentle walks and swimming. Reduce intensity, maintain consistency.

Types of Exercise

  1. Walking — The foundation of any exercise routine
  2. Running/Jogging — For high-energy breeds
  3. Fetch — Great for quick energy burn
  4. Swimming — Low-impact, excellent for joints
  5. Agility — Mental and physical stimulation
  6. Puzzle toys — Mental exercise matters too

Warning Signs of Over-Exercise

  • Excessive panting
  • Lagging behind on walks
  • Sore paws or limping
  • Sleeping more than usual

Always adapt exercise to your individual dog's condition. Consult your vet about appropriate activity levels, especially for puppies, seniors, or dogs with health conditions.
