Why Monsoons Are Risky for Dogs
India's monsoon season (June to September) creates warm, damp conditions that increase the risk of:
- Skin infections and fungal growth
- Waterborne diseases like leptospirosis
- Tick and flea infestations
- Digestive issues from contaminated water
- Ear infections from trapped moisture
Skin and Coat Care
Damp fur is a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi.
- Dry your dog thoroughly after every walk or exposure to rain
- Pay extra attention to paw pads, belly, and ear flaps
- Use a pet-safe antifungal spray if you notice redness or musty odour
- Avoid bathing too frequently — it strips natural oils; once every 2 weeks is generally enough
- Brush regularly to prevent matting that traps moisture
Leptospirosis Risk
Leptospirosis is a serious bacterial infection spread through contaminated stagnant water, puddles, and rat urine — all more common during monsoons.
- Vaccination is the best prevention — ask your vet about the lepto vaccine
- Avoid letting your dog drink from puddles, gutters, or standing water
- Wipe paws and belly after outdoor walks
- Watch for symptoms: fever, vomiting, dark urine, loss of appetite
Paw Care
Hot, wet streets and waterlogged sidewalks can irritate paw pads.
- Check between toes for cuts, redness, or swelling after walks
- Trim excess fur between paw pads to reduce moisture trapping
- Apply pet-safe paw balm to prevent cracking
- Avoid walking through deep puddles or flooded areas
Tick and Flea Prevention
Tick and flea populations spike during and after the monsoon.
- Maintain year-round tick prevention (spot-on, collar, or oral)
- Wash bedding and clean sleeping areas weekly
- Inspect your dog after every outdoor session
Feeding and Hydration
- Always provide clean, filtered water — change it multiple times daily
- Store dry kibble in airtight containers to prevent mould
- Avoid leaving wet food out for more than 30 minutes
- Monitor for digestive upset (loose stools, vomiting)
Ear Care
Floppy-eared breeds are especially prone to monsoon ear infections.
- Gently dry ears after rain exposure
- Use a vet-recommended ear cleaning solution weekly
- Watch for head shaking, scratching, or foul odour
